ClinX Energy Systems: German Engineering for energy technology and turbomachinery from Cottbus

Lusatian mining region · F60 overburden conveyor bridge · 502 m

Lusatia knows big machines.

The F60 overburden conveyor bridge is 502 metres long and one of the largest movable machines in the world. It was built for open-cast lignite mining in Lusatia.

Scale 1 : 2,000 to 1 : 2

We develop the small ones.

Next to the F60, a micro gas turbine looks tiny. It contains a compressor, combustor, turbine and generator and produces electricity and heat.

Micro gas turbine · 5 kW to 1 MW

Up to 100,000 revolutions per minute.

The compressor, turbine and generator sit on a common shaft. It runs on foil air bearings, entirely without oil.

Lusatian Lake District

Open-cast mines become lakes.

Where lignite used to be mined, lakes, forests and new industry are emerging today. The region’s energy technology is changing too.

Cottbus · since 2012

German Engineering from Lusatia.

ClinX Energy Systems has been developing energy technology and turbomachinery in Cottbus since 2012.

German Engineering from Cottbus

Development partner for energy technology and turbomachinery

Large manufacturers have largely withdrawn from the segment below 1 MW. If you want a compressor, a small turbine, a foil bearing or a high-speed generator developed today, you will find only a few partners in Germany who master the entire system.

ClinX Energy Systems covers design, bearings and drives, combustion, heat transfer and testing in one team. We develop according to the V-model, from the requirements specification to the acceptance run, as a complete project or for individual work packages, and on request we support the transition to series production.

Development projects

What we develop for you

Our focus is on energy technology and high-speed machinery. We also take on development work in related fields where flow, heat, high speeds or combustion play a role.

Your project does not fit any of these categories? Talk to us anyway.

Micro gas turbines and turbogenerators

Complete turbo units from 5 kW to 1 MW electrical output, with generator, power electronics and control unit.

Compressors and blowers

Radial and axial compressors, for example for the air supply of fuel cells and hydrogen systems.

High-speed drives

High-speed generators up to 100,000 rpm on foil air bearings, with inverter and control unit.

Burners and combustors

For hydrogen, low-calorific gases, special liquid fuels and dusts, additively manufactured on request.

Heat exchangers and thermal systems

High-temperature heat exchangers and their integration into the overall process.

Test benches and series production

We design and build test benches and plan series production for micro gas turbines and comparable machines.

What we do

Capabilities in energy technology and turbomachinery

Six disciplines from the first draft to series production. As you scroll, the drawing shows where each of them comes in. We also apply the same knowledge to compressors, drives and burners that are not part of a turbine.

Design

Design and simulation

We design compressors, turbines, rotors and the complete system using our own tools. We calculate the thermodynamic cycle, aerodynamics, structural strength and rotor dynamics together, because the components influence each other. We compare the results with measured data from our test benches.

  • Thermodynamic cycle and performance calculation with our own tools
  • Aerodynamics of axial and radial compressors and turbines
  • Flow simulation (CFD), steady-state and transient, with heat transfer and fluid-structure interaction
  • Structural analysis, modal analysis and Campbell diagram (FEM)
  • Shafts, press fits and rotor dynamics
  • Thermal management, secondary air system and seals

Bearings and drives

Foil air bearings and high-speed generators

Foil bearings support the shaft on an air film and need no oil. We design them, manufacture the bearing foils ourselves and test every bearing on our own test benches. We develop the high-speed generator on the shaft together with the inverter and control unit.

  • Journal and thrust foil air bearings
  • Bearing foils from our own production: machining, heat treatment, coating
  • High-speed generators up to 100,000 rpm
  • Power electronics and control unit (ECU)
  • Island and grid-parallel operation
  • System solutions from 5 kW to 1 MW electrical output

Combustion

Burners and combustors

We develop burners and combustors for hydrogen, low-calorific gases, special liquid fuels and dusts. We manufacture many burners additively. This reduces weight and installation space and allows cooling and mixing geometries that cannot be produced conventionally.

  • Can and annular combustors with diffusion, premixed or lean combustion
  • Fusel oils, low-calorific and ultra-low-calorific gases, dusts, LNG and LPG
  • Combustors for hydrogen
  • Additively manufactured burners and flare burners with more than 50% less weight and volume
  • Multi-fuel burners with fuel switching during operation
  • Tests from single burner to complete combustor

More on combustors

Heat transfer

High-temperature heat exchangers

We design heat exchangers for high temperatures and changing loads, matched to the overall process, and support them through to manufacturing.

  • Process analysis and concept
  • Thermal and fluid-dynamic design
  • Structural strength and service life
  • Detailed design and manufacturing support

Testing

Designing and building test benches

We design and build test benches for foil bearings, combustors, power electronics and complete micro gas turbines, for our own developments and on behalf of customers. In Cottbus, we assemble turbo units with tolerances in the micrometre range and test them on these test benches.

  • Test bench concept based on your measurement task
  • Combustion test benches
  • Air bearing test benches for lift-off, running on the air film and acceptance run
  • Test benches for power electronics and complete micro gas turbines
  • Measurement and automation technology
  • Assembly and tolerance management in the micrometre range

Into series production

Planning series production

If a micro gas turbine or another machine is to be built in quantity, we help plan the series production. We adapt the design to manufacturing, plan assembly and fixtures, design end-of-line test stations and qualify manufacturing partners.

  • Design for manufacturing and assembly
  • Assembly concept, cycle timing and fixtures
  • Tolerance management and inspection plans
  • End-of-line test stations
  • Selection and qualification of manufacturing partners
  • Support for pilot series and production ramp-up

Development in Germany

How a development project with us works

We take on complete machines or individual components. Every project starts with a conversation about your task, after which we work in four steps.

Or call us directly: +49 355 8695 9890

01

Enquiry and initial meeting

You describe your task to us, ideally with a requirements specification, sketch or key data. We give you an initial technical assessment.

02

Concept and quotation

We check feasibility, develop a concept and submit a quotation for the complete project or for individual work packages.

03

Development and build

Design and detailed design in-house, manufacturing with qualified partners, assembly in Cottbus. You receive regular progress updates.

04

Testing and handover

Tests on our test benches, measurement report and documentation. We then hand over the results and hardware to you. On request, we support the transition to series production.

Micro gas turbines

Electricity and heat on one shaft

In a micro gas turbine, the compressor, turbine and generator sit on one shaft. It runs on foil air bearings at up to 100,000 revolutions per minute, without oil and without a gearbox, and generates electricity and heat.

ClinX Energy Systems develops complete turbo units from 5 kW to 1 MW with power electronics and control unit for island and grid-parallel operation.

Who we work for
