Knowledge about small turbomachines
Studies, projects and fundamentals on micro gas turbines, foil bearings, hydrogen and test benches.
Terms from turbomachinery development
What is a Campbell diagram?
It shows the natural frequencies of a rotor plotted against speed. From it, you can see at which speeds resonances may occur and whether the operating range is clear of them.
What is a recuperator?
A heat exchanger that uses the hot exhaust gas from the turbine to preheat the compressed air before it enters the combustor. This saves fuel and significantly increases the electrical efficiency of small gas turbines.
What are low-calorific gases?
Fuel gases with a low calorific value, for example from landfills, sewage treatment plants or wood gasification. They ignite less readily and burn more slowly than natural gas and need combustors designed for them.
What does combined heat and power mean?
A plant generates electricity and usable heat at the same time. In a micro gas turbine, the heat from the exhaust gas is used, for example for space heating or process heat.
What is the V-model?
An approach to product development. Requirements are broken down step by step to the individual component and then verified in reverse order, from component testing to the acceptance run of the complete machine.
What is an end-of-line test?
The testing of every single machine at the end of series production. At a test station, the most important functions and measured values are checked before the machine is delivered.
